NCAD / MFA 2024. "Critical Zones".
My project “Critical Zones” delves into the physical and psychological effects of displacement, exposing the fragile nature of our connections to both material and emotional landscapes. My practice is a fusion of abstraction and figurative painting. I work from photo archives, family stories, symbolism, metaphor, representations of things that are sensed more than seen, interpretations of an elusive space that exists in the overlap between the virtual realm and the physical world, shaped by the process of their creation, generated through equal measures of construction and deconstruction. I build up my paintings layer upon layer of oil paint through a practice of expressive mark making, creating critical zones within the plane of my canvas where the physical and the imaginary collide in an abstract reflection of human existence.
